What Are Disinfection Services?

According to the National Pest Management Associations, disinfection services are “designed to treat inanimate, non-porous touchpoints (fomites) that serve as passive disease transmission vectors.”

When contaminated with infectious agents, such as pathogenic bacteria, viruses (e.g. COVID-19), and fungi, these fomites can transfer disease to new hosts.

Disinfection services are designed to control the organisms that are present at the time of treatment, but they do not provide “residual disinfection” (i.e. ongoing disinfection). As such, proper service frequency must be determined based on several factors, including “customer risk profile, volume of public access and interaction with the site, amount of employee interaction with fomites, and viability of supplement disinfectant programs.”

The virus that causes COVID-19 is stable for long periods, from hours to days, both in aerosols and on surfaces, according to a new study from the National Institutes of Health, CDC, UCLA, and Princeton University scientists in the New England Journal of Medicine. Therein, researchers determined that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was detectable for:

  • Up to 3 hours in aerosols
  • Up to 4 hours on copper
  • Up to 24 hours on cardboard
  • Up to 2-3 days on plastic and stainless steel

The results provide critical information about the spread and stability of SARS-CoV-2, suggesting that people may acquire the virus both through community spread and by touching contaminated surfaces.

In light of these findings, the value of disinfection services is clear, both as an infection-control protocol and an opportunity to generate serious service revenues in 2021. As mentioned above, disinfection services can effectively treat harmful organisms, but because they provide no “residual disinfection,” repeat treatments are a must. And that’s great news for service providers!
